I was having a conversation within some networking, discussing around getting motivated to do things and in particular exercise, and how I have a morning routine.
One particular discussion was getting into the habit of doing exercise, or doing whatever action you want to do, which brought me back to James Clear’s Book – ‘Atomic Habits’.
What I do to start Building a Habit, is anchor it to something that is already in my routine, James calls it ‘Habit Stacking’, I didn’t realise this, I was already calling it ‘Anchoring’.
As an example, one of the first things I do in the morning is have a coffee, but I wanted to ensure I did my exercise in the morning as well, so I anchored it to the coffee routine, I wasn’t allowed my coffee until I have done my weights and Exercise, in James words ‘Habit Stacking’.
I’ve done the same when my dog gets taken for a walk, I anchored (stacked) this with reading my book. I’ve used this on multiple occasions and it’s a superb way of turning an action into a habit and routine.
Give it a go.
